Hotel Domus De Janas Sardegna
.: Excursions
Always taking a new route, every time different excursions on amazing paths which impress with breathtaking panoramas, and which are embedded in the wild, native nature of Sardinia. There is for instance the Parco dei Tacchi of Ogliastra, stretching to the slopes of the mountain massif Gennargentu. From the Supramonte of Baunei, traversing the ravine of Su Gorroppu you will at last reach the coast of Ogliastra.

The ravine of Gorroppu (Urzulei) The ravine of Gorroppu offers one of the most endearing and impressive views of the island. The walls of Codula Orbisi and the ravine of Gorroppu, the mountains of the Supramonte of Orgosolo and the Nuraghe Mereu and Presenthu Tolu form a real, natural amphitheatre which is divided by the water of the river Flumineddu. Once you reach the valley, you can admire the beautiful and famous small lakes and the irregular stone walls of the ravine, which were formed by the continuous , fast flow of the water. Grottoes, waterfalls, from the rainwater bloated rivers, small lakes and gigantic rocks create a surreal landscape. At the last one of the numerous small lakes, in front of the overhang and inside the amphitheatre, you can let your eyes wander over a scenery that is covered by Mediterranean woods, endemic flowers and plants, and where you can see eagles and moufflons walking around in the wild nature. If you are interested in exploring the area on your own, for instance to discover the badgers that live in the ravine, it is obligatory to take an off-road vehicle.

The caves of Su Marmuri (Ulassai) The caves of Su Marmuri in Ulassai is an underground limestone cave, which is 900 metres long and 890 metres below sea level. You have access through a huge, imposing entry, which lies 34 metres deep and has a flight of stairs with 199 steps at disposal. Those stairs lead to an area with low ceilings, which form the start of the path. The Majestic appearance of the grottoe is impressive and frightening at the same time. On a long piece of the path there is no natural light, the rest of the way is illuminated. The cave is characterized by myriads of tanks that are often brimful filled with water, by gigantic stalagmites and stalactites, by interesting formations and rock cacti, and by natural salons which often have surprisingly high ceilings. Those conditions favour the growing of beetles and bat colonies. The nature in this region is rich of sources, waterfalls, plateaus and Mediterranean woods.

Scala San Giorgio (Osini) Hidden between the mountains and surrounding Osini there is located the stair of San Giorgio, a formation of several deep cuts in the limestone rock where the ancient habitants of the village made a passage to reach the other side of the mountain. The name was chosen in honour of San Giorgio, who in the legend cut the mountain to pass through. A long stair made out of rocks surrounds a deep cut of about 100m and goes up to the top, where it is possible to see the whole Pardu valley. The presence of karstic springs, woods, orchids, nuraghe, grottoes and olive trees makes the place special.
